Here's the beginning of a list...first, it does not integrate with my
calendar--which is on Google and which numerous people in my family and work
share as a standard.

Second, it doesn't autosave.

Third, it doesn't make suggestions for including others...

Fourth, it doesn't have a canned response feature native to it.  Google's is
easy and good.

Fifth, the integrated spell checking in Gmail is easier, faster and, for
reasons I can't quite distinguish...preferable.

Google's tool bar is simple, easy and straightforward...no analog on
Thunderbird.

Adding Bcc and editing the subject are trivial on gmail.

Adding labels, sorts and moving things to files is much easier and more
standard on gmail.

gmail is readily available on mobile phones...and I can download my exact
setup on any machine in the world trivially.

I forward conversations regularly...gmail makes this easy.

It is one click to send a reader article in google reader in gmail.  I'm
still trying to figure out if it can be done in Thunderbird.

Google gears and other offline tools allow me to be productive when Internet
service is intermittent.

Archive is easy, free and extremely powerful in gmail...and it is universal
and accessible anywhere I go.  No such feature on Thunderbird and hard to
access it on gmail if I use the pop interface to gmail.

That's a beginning...there are others.

I do like the contact features on Thunderbird better...which are
Outlook-like.

Like I said, much of this is probably personal pref.  Reader isn't close.
Google Reader is simply vastly superior...sharing, reactions, reposts to
delicious and Facebook...much easier and more straightforward.

Just my opinion...
