please see the reply I posted to Ryan on this list today. It is about
this very problem. I can only add to what I wrote in that other
message:

1) mailing list is less efficient ONLY when formatting is terrible,
   which is the just case here.

2) in this particular case, a forum wouldn't solve anything. If one
   doesn't want to format his/her own messages properly, you'll have
   forum discussions which will be as hard to read and therefore
   remain as private as the ones happening here.
