And therein lies the problem. Lip service aside, most self-described
liberals in this very liberal area of California could be described
the same way if you judge them by their actions rather than their
words. They call themselves "liberals" because they like the sound of
it, not because they actually are.
We have a local population that is against gay marriage (and just
about every other socially liberal agenda item) when you put it on a
secret ballot, a local government that cuts special deals with favored
big corporate businesses, a city council that adamantly refuses to
allow any construction that is environmentally friendly because they
feel it adversely impacts the quaint feel of their community (and
their property values!). They might actually be anti-war in principle,
but they are nonetheless awash in military research money that they go
to no small lengths to obtain. And there is not a conservative to be
found, just very progressive, left-wing liberal Democrats and Greens
-- just ask them!
Hypocrisy, in other words. It is all about status and posturing. There
are a few genuinely left-wing progressive people, but they are
definitely in the minority. Portland has more real P2P progressives
than the San Francisco area. (In fact, if I had to pick a center of
the universe for left-progressive P2P communities, Portland would be
the first place that pops into mind. It has a very large and very
active community of people working and living this way, mostly
California escapees from the dotcom boom.)
