That makes complete sense to me Sam, but the question of systems is one of
boundaries.  Where does a system stop?  Reductionists are always seeking
discreet processes (e.g. the Krebs cycle in biology).  In information theory
they want facts to be relatively "atomic" in philosophical terms.

Emergeance emphasizes dynamic and interaction...so it seems to me to be two
perspectives or points of view on overlapping versions of reality.

Image you see normally and I see in infrared...like Yule Brenner's character
in Westworld.  The heat signature of a human is my system...and it includes
more than the body...it includes warmed air going into lungs, etc.
Couldn't it be the case that reductionists are approaching reality with one
point of view and emergeance theorists are approaching it with another?  If
so, then who bends to create a bridge between the two perspectives...a
theory of the light spectrum by analogy?

In physics there was a relatively rapid movement from people finding
electrons at Cambridge in the early 1900s and quantum mechanics in Germany
to a unification of the two in the grand theories of the 1960s where people
were trying to unify big messes between light theory people and sub-atomic
structure people.  The world lays out rather nice neat puzzles for
physicists by and large.  Biology is messier because we have consciousness
to deal with...something that, so far, has avoided mechanistic
understanding.

I suspect humans are alive today who will see something that most of us will
agree is both machine and conscious.  You (might) disagree.  I say, how can
we begin to discuss what terms like consciousness, intelligence and
emergeance mean in boundary terms so we can know when and how we approach
those boundaries?  If a person crosses a boundary...even if it is a gray
zone like an atmosphere of a planet, we should be aware of the change
parameters.

My guess is that the reductionist will want to focus on the boundary
conditions...which is just what this guy Shane Legg is doing in his
dissertation on Machine Super Intelligence...he wants to get people to
discuss rules for what they take to be intelligence...sounds simple enough,
but as he points out...there isn't much consensus.

Now, lets have the same sort of discussion about...abundance, P2P, peers,
free...etc.  What are the boundary conditions?
