Just read this older item as I'm researching what people on this list have
said about Google Android (not much) as I think about making an Android app.
It seems to me that of all the phone programming enviroments, Google Android
is the one that must most closely match the P2P ethos, with open source
aspects of the "Open Handset Alliance" as well as the designed-in
flexibility to mix and match user contributed applications. I'm not saying
it is perfect (for example, privacy issues), but it seems closest of what is
out there to something P2P-ish.
So, just a note on this item that: "If not Google, who?"
This is not to disagree with concerns about Google related to privacy and
power (other than the usual meshworks/hierarchies balance point I make from
Manuel de Landa), so much as to say that these issues are more structural
problems with a mostly unregulated market economy, where one actor can gain
so much wealth. So, it would be somebody who did all this, if not Google.
And, like a bunch of sunflowers in one small patch, the rich get richer, as
more resources lead to bigger root systems, and growing even bigger, and
competing even more successfully, etc. That is one more market failure mode.
On the other hand, at what point does such a growing system transcend a
scarcity-assuming rent-seeking marketplace entirely?
Taxes and a basic income are likely part of this balance.

Google seeing how, in a way, we are all working for it (most as unpaid
labor) and extending Google benefits to everyone like free food. :-) But
that is about paradigm shifts. I had a related proposal in my "Sunrise
Sustainable Technology Ventures" company/non-profit idea twenty years ago.
At what point can one hugely successful company essentially become the new
organizational paradigm of the world?

As I pointed out on those lists, Google is as stuck in this post-scarcity
paradigm issue as anyone -- all this amazing technology but old business
models and an old market model. So, once again, powerful post-scarcity
technology in the hands of a scarcity-preoccupied culture. And Google is
part of that. Let's hope, together, we can non-violently and equitably
transition to a new post-scarcity paradigm.
