My point had more to do with the cultural and legal legacy. For
example, they imprinted English concepts of "contract" and property on
their colonies which have become the cornerstone of modern economies
even in countries that were not English colonies. The Spanish system
was more feudal and you see many remnants of that to this day.

Spanish colonialism was heavily involved with enslavement of the
natives. It is how we ended up with Filipino slaves in the Americas.
