I cannot speak to the details of any social situation. I know what is going
on in Venezuela is profound and beyond reversal and have heard this from a
few people I've asked informally who are more knowledgeable than me. The
jury is somewhat out...but trending pretty negative from people I've chatted
with here. Most of the old Venezuelan oligarchs are now ensconced in a
thriving Panama. Panama and Colombia are emerging as economic powerhouses.
Chile and Bolivia are trading a great deal of natural resources to China and
some finished products (e.g. wine) to the U.S.
People I talked to here were very positive about Colombia and Argentina.
Chile was dismissed as a natural resource story...as was Bolivia. Bolivia,
I was told, compares very well with Zambia in Africa. Both possible risers
based on huge natural resource wealth (both in mostly copper).
People here regularly visit Colombia...Baranquillo especially...which is
booming. I hear Caracas is like Havana...locked in a former time...sort of
frozen. People who invest are investing in Panama.
We watch Honduras closely...have a regular flight there. It is poor and
struggling, but only modestly corrupt compared to some others (especially
the much doubted Belize.)
I'll ask around and see if I can get anything more. I hear Peru is
considered very corrupt...as is Ecuador. Apparently the way to get a job
in those places is strictly through nepotism. Belize is probably
the regional capital of corruption.
