FWIW, there is a nascent sense in some circles that theoretical
computer science is due for a wholesale rewrite. Virtually all of our
computer science is based on assumption made in the 1950s, many of
which are irrelevant or make no sense now. Most of the problems we
have with, e.g. algorithm scalability and capability, can be traced to
those deeply embedded assumptions which unfortunately have the inertia
of a "mature" field. Some really interesting algorithms have been
developed in the last couple years simply by re-deriving the field
from scratch with the explicit hindsight of a half-century of effort.
