The main open source competitor to Oracle has always been PostgreSQL.
MySQL is complementary to Oracle's product line, not competitive.
Oracle does not offer a good low-end product and MySQL can't play at
the high-end. I don't see the problem.
Fortunately, PostgreSQL can't be bought. In the high-end analytical
database market many prominent products are modified versions of
PostgreSQL (Netezza, Aster Data, Greenplum, etc).
