What is your connection to RMI and the trucking industry, if any? If you
believe the odds are good, what are you basing that on? You somehow picked
one industry I actually know about, since I'm in it.
I do catch an RMI news story or a blog post now and then, and I haven't seen
anything remarkable in our industry's area. I am not unfamiliar with
Wal-mart and their varied fleet (they buy plenty of our trucks). I'm not
going to say much about it (nor am I supposed to), but a little general
info... I am not sure how you are interpreting "redesign," but I think the
word is misleading. Big customers do have sway over options, but they are
still buying base truck models; the technologies available as cab options to
improve fuel efficiency have been, and are, ongoing efforts by many
manufacturers, not RMI. Every big fleet wants to cut costs. Auxiliary
generators, for example, are nothing new. The places to shave fuel use and
improve efficiency are not big secrets. This is an industry where
increasing fuel economy by 3% is a big deal. As for trailer improvements
(particularly attempting side skirts), it's a hard problem. I wish them
luck in their efforts; it's always good to get some fresh perspectives in
R&D.
If RMI is not providing much information on their sites, not sure how I
would keep closer tabs on them without contacting them personally. I'm also
not sure what I should keep up to date with: I count 4 press releases in
2007, and 3 newsletters.
As for composites, I wasn't pointing a finger at them saying they weren't
safe. My point is, Lovins writes little to nothing about safety. There are
many issues: aerodynamic concerns are complex (cars cannot just be built
like planes), smaller cars have little in the way of crumple zones, etc. To
be fair, no one's saying they have to be small or really aerodynamic, but
then, that is where the huge efficiency claims have to contend with
feasibility.
Getting back on economic topic: that's not a fair summary at all. I think
there's plenty of merit in designing better, more efficient vehicles;
however, I do not think there's any merit in producing them in great
quantity and driving their consumption on the scale (likely, far larger) we
have done previously, or do today. Making them more efficient simply won't
help the consumption problem. It's simply moralistic consumerism:
attempting to make people feel good (or less guilty) about
hyperconsumption. One only needs imagine driving in the Los Angeles area
with 100% hypercars. Less smog, and that's pretty much it. I don't have a
problem with research, but I do have a problem with claiming it's a step to
solving a problem it doesn't even address.
My point was that the projects (hexayurt, OSE) address real needs rather
than mass production and profit-driven consumption of waste that actually
increases wealth disparity and empowers no one.
Do you see where I'm coming from now? I'm not trying to demonize Lovins, he
seems like a good, smart guy, but I do think he enthusiastically counts his
chicks before they hatch in NatCap, and that it was, overall, a shallow
book. I may be critical, but at least I'm honest about why. I have nothing
against Lovins, or you for liking the book. I also, btw, have nothing
against Hawken, or RMI.
