btw, Kris, you do raise some excellent questions regarding getting
initiatieves into a sustainable modus and perhaps even beyond the tipping
point.
One of my biggest frustrations indeed is to help and catalyze noble
initiatives beyond the tipping point. There are so many individual and
fragmented initiatives. It's the sum of the parts rather than an impactful
whole.

On the other hand, this is a normal phenomenon during the emergence of a new
system. Having been part of the emergence of "THE Internet" first
(1989–1993), the Web next (1992–1997) and the Java technology (1995–2000),
and now Web 2.0, you can see the same pattern.

E.g. the Java technology went through a similar process. One company leading
it (Sun Microsystems), Netscape pitching in, and later even Microsoft,
creating momentum. Its technical development over the years is characterized
by a flurry of similar, distributed, fragmented efforts, while Sun trying
its best to steward it all to an elegant coherent platform, including its
community process and standardization efforts. All in a pre-competitive way
(Sun, IBM, Microsoft, Netscape, Apple, HP, all jointly developed it while
competing at the same time). It has both a tremenduous success as well as
some less elegant failures and technical "flaws" or wrinkles. But it sure
beat the development of the UNIX "standard" earlier.

That said, Kevin Kelly's Waggling the Long Tail of
Love<http://www.kk.org/thetechnium/archives/2008/07/wagging_the_lon.php>
is
a fine essay on the three pockets of the long tail. Chris Anderson quotes
him verbatim with The Long Tail: Kevin Kelly: The Three
Tails<http://www.longtail.com/the_long_tail/2008/07/kevin-kelly-the.html>
.

TMO excellent pieces of work. The third pocket (in the long tail) is
about love of creating, of making, of connecting, of unreasonable passion,
or making a difference, or doing something that matters to ourselves, the
love of connecting, giving, learning, producing, and sharing.

Now, what we in p2presearch could focus on is how we can catalyze the
process of transitioning from pocket #3 (which I'll call Passion from now
on) to pocket #2 (Partner), closer to the tipping point. Next, the
transition from the Passion pocket to the Profit pocket (#3) is also an
interesting research area—getting beyond the tipping point.

Once in the Partner or Profit pocket, we can also devise innovative ways to
have money flow back to the Passion pocket, thereby lifting the entire long
tail graph to a Diamond Age: wealth, abundance and happiness for everyone,
including Earth itself.

Thoughts?

Succes en plezier,

Martien.

Dear Michel,

thanks for this very clear explanation from Rome, as impressive as your
presentation from Australia. You really *have* the talent of speech.

But again I feel a little bit frustrated by your non mentioning of two major
difficulties with p2p, synergy, etc., that very often are limiting its full
realisation. At least, as I perceive it.

(1) of course, Google and every p2p system can gather all bits of knowledge,
distributed allover the globe and the Web. But I think that many bits of
information, including yet undiscovered and creative possibilities,
insoluble conflicts, are still missing. However perfect the search, the
essential information is often not (yet) available. And here comes in what I
call *integration*, a technique of creative thinking. It is not something
one masters spontaneously, or that automatically starts as soon as
internet-like communication channels become available. It is a technique and
an intellectual discipline that, along my experience as therapist and coach,
require explicit training. And in all p2p discourses I read and hear, this
crucial aspect of communication is nearly never mentioned.

(2) A second major phenomenon, hitting many attempts to p2p and synergistic,
integrative functioning, is a kind of non-compliance, non-motivation,
not-feeling-responsible by the majority of the group. Even in wiki-sites,
blogs, where interaction has only a minimal treshold, people not often feel
enough motivation to interact, to react on the proposed texts, to propose
alternatives, to elaborate integrations, to share experiences. The real work
renmains to be done by a little group of idealists. This participatory
discipline is, in my experiemnce, the major reason why so many idealistic,
synergistic initiatives spontaneously fall back, after a lapse of time, to
more hierarchical organizations, or fade out.

I.m.h.o, these both problems should deserve our full attention before we can
really step upwards to the next stage of the realisation of our p2p ideal.

Regards, Kris
