Martien's concerns are one reason why I've been helping people experiment
with either ELGG http://elgg.org as an open source social network platform.
Especially for people who are interested in creating their own network.

I set up an example for a friend here a while back
http://socialsynergyweb.com/intentionalcommons

This has the same personal and group aggregation, and the system allows the
import/export of FOAF files, which has existed for quite a number of years
now, and *can* make all of your profiles and friends data totally portable
(so can XFN specification).

That being said, for connecting your network with *other* networks, Ning is
a decent option. Ning also is starting to support more open data formats in
the form of microformats.

Ning supports hcard, xfn, cite, and others. I know that some folks are
working on making all data exportable from Ning. So, overall it does not
seem like too bad of a deal.
