Keep in mind that rats are nocturnal animals and we are diurnal. This makes them less than an ideal test model for humans (there cycles aren't simply reversed from ours, but are different). One of the people in in the psychology department here at Monash has finished PhD where he was developing a diurnal model using the African Palm Squirrel. Over the coming years we should here more and more sleep studies based around this or dirunal animals.
