One of the problems with Michael's position is that it is possible that
normal sleep doesn't kill you, because as he said the brain activity
continues, but that deep anesthesia does (supposing that in fact brain
waves stop during that time).

### As a practicing neurologist I can assure you that deep anesthesia (e.g.
250 micrograms of Propofol per minute) does abolish brain waves as seen on
standard EEG. For all practical considerations information processing is
stopped.

The patients I talked to never had any problems with this instance of
personal discontinuity.
