Division for Planetary Sciences
33rd Annual Meeting
27 November - 1 December 2001
New Orleans, Louisiana, USA
http://www.boulder.swri.edu/dps01/
The Division of Planetary Sciences (DPS) of the American
Astronomical Society meeting begins in New Orleans, Louisiana. This
meeting is the largest gathering of planetary scientists (~700 people)
in the world: it's held every year in a different location (every 5th year
in Europe). I'll be there along with half my Heidelberg dust group.
The DPS will hold several Public Talks, and I list them below. You
can go to the URL for more information.
Planetary Society Public Night and Education
The "Public Night" is scheduled for Tuesday 27 at 8 pm. During this
evening, a teleconference will be established that will allow
Arthur C. Clarke to present his "Worlds of Sol". Education posters
will be displayed from Tuesday 27, 9 am until Saturday 1, 3 pm.
The Ponchartrain Astronomical Society and The Kenner Planetarium and
Observatory announce a public evening. Kenner Planetarium and
Observatory, Wednesday, November 28, 2001, 7:30 pm. David H. Levy
will present the following talk "Why study other worlds? Now more
than ever" and AndrČ Brahic will give a lecture and will be presented
the Carl Sagan prize (title: The "Story of our Origins", but it's a
very tentative title).
Two other 'big lectures' are being given during the week (besides
the ~500 talks by the participants :-)), but I don't know if they
are Public, or if people need to pay to listen in ::
The two prize lectures given by the awardees of the Urey (Dr. M.E.
Brown: "What Happened in the Outer Solar System") and Kuiper (Dr.
B.W. Hapke: "Space Weathering - Surfing the Shifting Paradigm")
prizes are scheduled for Wednesday 28th, 2-3 pm and Friday 30th at
2-3 pm, respectively.
If you are in the area, you might enjoy this.
