a short note about the Leonids:
When I was at ESTEC (European Space Agency Technology Center in Noordwijk,
Netherlands) last week for a dust meeting, I heard some intereresting Leonids
news from one in our dust meeting, Neil McBride, an astronomer from a group
at Open University in UK. Neil and his coworker: Michael Mueller had wondered
about David Asher's predictions for the major Leonids storm this year,
and the good news is Michael Mueller independently confirmed Asher's
values. (Asher has been "right on" in the past couple of years, but it
was good to check.)
Moreover, it looks like the "clump" that Asher predicts will pass through
a part of geostationary orbit. A Leonids passing through geostationary has not
happened in the last decades, and now our Earth is surrounded with satellites.
So it will be a really interesting time for the satellite operators
on Novemeber 19. Neil said that his UK group will put out a press notice
soon about this.
