If "An Argument for the Cometary Origin of the Biosphere" by Armand H.
Delsemme (in _American Scientist_ September-October 2001; see
http://www.sigmaxi.org/amsci/amsci/articles/01articles/delsemme.html) is
right, the Earth probably lost a few oceans and atmospheres early in its
history which were, lucky for us, replenished by comets several times, but
not over-replenished.
I wonder if having liquid oceans has an impact on having plate tectonics...
