Well, the very background of the book (humans with the material high ground
over the posthumans) couldn't happen without the PHs having trapped themselves
in navel-gazing for a hundred years, which itself followed a mysterious
die-off among the PHs.

Me, I like to believe the Black Plan attacked the PHs, possibly from within,
crippling them. This actually turns the Crash into a self-defense act on the
part of the Jovians, which really starts spinning the moral compass. MacLeod
never commented on this idea, though.
