A nanometer is 3 atoms across, and the core idea in nano, (at least in the
Drexlerian theory) is atomic precision, every atom in the proper place.
Micro is a thousand fold larger in scale, dealing with herds of atoms. In
general, it's not nearly at atomic precision. Biology is a naturally
evolved type of nanotechnology, in which devices require having every atom
in it's proper place. Femto, is the scale of an atomic nucleus, that would
mean building complex devices out of protons and neutrons or in some
interpretations, out of quark gluon plasmas. That's very much smaller in
length scale, and very much higher in energy scale than dealing with atoms.
At the current level of science, we haven't a clue how to do things at
femtotech.
All you really need to do is manipulate atoms to bring on cures, immortality
etc. (the interesting stuff) I don't see the point of spending the energy at
a lower level than necessary.
