Sometimes there is just nothing you can do about such parents (my own mother is
just the type too, so I understand implicitly). I recall a line from a movie,
where a college applicant is told: "Financial aid is for kids whose parents are
poor, not for kids whose parents are assholes."

Many of the baby boomer parents seem to be pretty good about this whole 'honest,
unconditional' parenting approach, especially many people I've known from
California. Parents who are extreme religious whackjobs do not fall into this
category. Of course, I'm sure if a hippy's kid applied to work at the CIA or to
the FBI Academy, they'd probably bust a nut over that as well... everyone has
buttons to push, some just keep them in non-standard places.
