Cool article. It's very funny seeing someone talking (from '91) about how
Unix and C are basically horrible 50% solutions, compared to what should be;
the "right thing" vs "worse is better" discussions. Especially amusing in
comparison to the Unix/C vs Windows/(VB et al) discussions which abound
nowadays; the same stuff, but with Unix/C on the other side.
It's interesting that, over time, we are apparently learning to write
shittier software, as the market demands speed of delivery over all else. I
like some of his (quite positive) analysis of the rise of the "worse is
better" approach (concluding that it has been responsible for the rise of
the component-based, highly integrateable small chunks approach to software,
at the expense of large monolithic systems). An astute analysis. Even if he
doesn't notice that PCs exist (just toys after all, hoo hoo).
