Without further stuttering, the cycles in magnetic alignment in seafloor
lava is relative to the precession of the magnetic pole, which has been
shown to be tightly tied in with the differential in rotation between
the mantle and the core. As this precession is cyclic at around 40,000
years, from what I've heard, this is a decent stopwatch for such
geologic changes, so long as the moons orbit is not significantly
changed over time, which would change the tidal drag vector on the crust
and mantle, thus changing the path and cycle of the precession of the
magnetic pole. NOTE: this is not related to the 26,000 precession cycle
of our rotational axis relative to the stars.
