I remember this flap. The kerberos open standard requires that developers
publish their source code for community review, to keep kerberos an open
standard. Microsoft agreed to this requirement. They used kerberos open
source code in Windows 2000. When it came time to comply with the open
source publishing requirement to make the source code publicly available,
their lawyers twisted the rules. They "published" the "open source" and
made it "publicly available" with a legal agreement attached. To open the
document, one had to agree not to use anything contained in it. Their
lawyers then attacked websites and magazines that tried to use or discuss
the "open source code". Although they agreed to the open source standards,
and used the open source in their products, they refuse to let others use
the open source code they published. They want the open source sharing to
flow only one way.
