If Max is serious about taking legal action, we do not want someone going to the library and screwing up the evidence. It has to be done in a manner that will stand up in a court of law. It has to be proven that the log was not tampered with, and the name found in the log was there before any of us had access to the log. Also, our testimony of finding the name is not useful. We need the library to confirm that they provided the name, and originally recorded it without influence from us.
A private eye, a law enforcement officer (even off-duty), or a forensics specialist should be able to handle these requirements and the library personnel just fine.
Also, to state the obvious, the name written in the logs by this liar may not be the correct one. The procedures used by the library to record the names must be scrutinized. If it is a signature, it needs to be validated as being authentic or not.
