Heinlein's `They' (1941). A similar trope is run exhaustively in Phil
Dick's terrific TIME OUT OF JOINT, which I read in 1961; his picture of
life in 1998 or thereabout had shave-headed street kids with 'tude not
unlike the punks, and utterly unthinkable by most people at the end of the
1950s...
