The pun was entirely unconscious (yes, I can
be that dense!)

I have read Damien's _The Spike_ (ordered it several
years ago from an Austrialian on-line bookstore,
in fact). Both _Nano_ and _Great Mambo Chicken_
are sitting on my shelves, but I haven't done much
more than browse in them. Apart from _The Spike_, the
only ultratech/Singularity books I've read through have
been Moravec's _Mind Children_ (back in '88),
_Beyond Humanity: CyberEvolution and Future Minds_
by Gregory S. Paul and Earl D. Cox (Charles River
Media, 1996), and the '98 Moravec and '99 Kurzweil
books. Still, my mind hasn't exactly been closed
(or I wouldn't be here, would I?). Nevertheless, I
suppose I really should force myself to overcome my
Hofstadter-phobia, whatever its source. If I start
reading and find the author's voice congenial, the rest
will take care of itself. I've never been terribly
methodical or systematic about my reading, though --
never thought I had any reason to be.
