Because of the chivalrous tendency of some alpha or wannabe-alpha males to wish to machismo-istically protect/defend other 'weaker' people (primordially women) from assailants (mainly to impress those women and others so they can be perceived as dominant and get laid), which means they are primed to attack those whom they believe present such a danger. This tendency gets warped from "protext with weapons" to "protect weapons" as the original protector/defender impetus gets psychologically projected/transferred upon the means as if it were what it does indeed become for them, an end in itself; thus the infamous Bush, Sr. bumper sticker "defend firearms" instead of defend WITH firearms. Of course this means their intellection takes a backseat to their emotions and they feel impelled to attack anyone who proposes even the most logical, rational and reasonable controls upon weapons access as the dastardly inhuman enemy who are attacking their more precious lumps of empowering me!

And notice the "man" and "mankind" in the quote (it isn't a big female thing), as well as the sexual and anthropomorphic referral to the weapon as his "queen" to be "possessed" and "used well"; clear illustrations of the psychological displacement to which I referred.
