Steve Coles of the LA GRG, has mentioned here at the LifeEx Tech
conference, that he expects to see an announcement next week
by Celera *and* the Government that a consensus draft of the
genome is complete with public "papers" scheduled for publication
in Sept./Oct.
It looks like there may be some interesting "fine print" that the
"public" data or some "subset" of it will not be able to be
copied into "private" databases where the intent is to resell
it "for profit" (so Celera has some protection for the information
it spent its private money obtaining).
It will be interesting to watch how that agreement plays out
but it seems to me to be a reasonable compromise since it
gives academics and the public at large unregulated access
to the "body" of data.
