A country club prison is paradise after a Turkish jail, but it's still a
prison.
The problem, as I see it, is not one of "giving" people freedom. Americans
are guaranteed freedom by the Constitution. The problem is keeping the
government operating within the bounds of the law, and preventing it from
removing our freedoms for trivial or imaginary reasons.
Since the erosion of our freedoms is such a gradual thing, we are in the
position of the lobster in the pot - we don't know we're cooked until it's
too late.
