Depends on the area, they used either the strong inner fibrous bark or rushes:
Slippery Elm bark, False Nettle; Basswood bark.
For some purposes the twine was used without twisting, the width of the fiber
depending on how much strength required; thus a strip could be could be fine
and soft as cotton -- or heavy and hold considerable weight. They
som,etimesboiled the fiber to give it extra strength. False nettle made fish
net.
Bulrush twine and Cedar were also woven into twine and used for clothes and
housing and blankets.
