An interesting science fiction book about that kind of thing is _Eon_ by Greg Bear. The book involves concepts of parallel universes and the ability to travel between them, the "parts" issue is raised by the alien race in the novel which is similar to Star Trek's "Borg" in terms of the alien's quest for assimilation. They record everything and then render it. It's a good book.
I have read hundreds and hundreds of science fiction books, but none in the last several years.
