Worse, they're being pedantic _without_ even being correct. The year AD 1 started on March 1, not January. So there are two choices for how you choose to celebrate "the millennium" (quoted to emphasize that this is merely a matter of definition, not substance): January 1, 2000 with the rest of the planet, or March 1, 2001 with a few historians. Anyone who celebrates January 1, 2001 is just a pedantic jerk for no good reason.
