Selfish DNA, genome structural functions, and regulatory action(eg.
heterochromatin and position-effect variegation) are all I can think of.
Maybe you could check out some articles on transposons and/or
heterochromatin. These articles are everywhere, and there are also many
books on the subject. Here's a review paper on heterochromatin by a
