SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 11, 1997--Nanogen Inc. has
received a two-year, $2 million Advanced Technology Program (ATP)
award from the U.S. Commerce Department to fund development of a
portable genetic analysis system for forensic analysis, battlefield
casualty identification, trauma victim identification, medical
diagnostics, epidemiology and environmental and health monitoring.
The project was one of only eight chosen by the department's
National Institute of Standards and Technology from a pool of over
300 applicants in the ATP 1996 General Competition.
The company is also developing a fully integrated
microelectronic DNA diagnostic system under a separate ATP award
announced in 1995.

ATP award recipient," said Howard C. Birndorf, chairman and chief
executive officer of Nanogen. "We share the Commerce Department's
vision of resolving challenging technological issues in areas which
could result in broad-based social and economic benefit for the
United States."
Nanogen Inc. is a privately held company focused on the
development of an integrated diagnostic platform which combines
molecular genetics, microelectronics, lasers and nanotechnology.
Centered around its proprietary Automated Programmable Electronic
Matrix (APEX) microchip array technology, Nanogen is developing a
series of products directed toward infectious disease diagnosis,
genetic screening, molecular oncology, blood typing/screening and
biological research, as well as a number of other applications.
Nanogen Inc. currently employs 55 people at its corporate
headquarters in San Diego.
