Investigating Structure and Properties of Protein/Biomaterials Interfaces
with Multi-Mode Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM)
Interfaces between proteins and biomaterials will be investigated with
scanning probe microscopy (SPM). A better understanding of these
interfaces is important for both the development of passive and active
biomaterials which promote the restoration and repair of body tissue and
for the improvement in the materials used in drug delivery devices. The
multi-mode scanning probe microscope (SPM) is a relatively new tool which
allows the study of the interfacial structure and the mechanical and
chemical properties of the interfaces with sub-nanometre (< 10-9 m)
resolution. The expected results of the study will lead to models which
relate the interfacial composition, structure and the process parameters to
the performance of the interfaces and, hence, enabling improvements in
these interfaces through purposeful surface engineering to be achieved.
This is a joint interdisciplinary project between the biomaterials group of
the department of oral and dental science and the scanning probe microscopy
group/bio-polymer group of the physics department.
