reality ALife ecosystem in floating polysaccharide (molecular computer)
carpets in Greg Egan's "Wang's Carpets" (Luminous ain't bad, either), and
lends his renderer to the main character of the story, an EZ-polis
uploader. Ironically, the first found extraterestrial life form is even
more solipsistic/weird than the introspective implosion civ of Terra
uploaders.
