The MIT anime society recently chose Crest of Stars (Seikai no Monshou) to
be our fall series, and I have to say I was very impressed by the treatment
of some of the softer areas of Transhumanism in it. The series is a space
opera based on some books by Morioka Hiroyuki (No English translation) and
follows the son of the governor of a recently conquered planet as he
integrates into Abh society. The Abh have genetically engineered
themselves to live longer, and to better deal with life in space. They
also make use of exowombs, mixing genes from people of the same sex, and
assorted other reproductive technologies that I have never seen presented
to sympathetically or humanly. The four episodes were pretty high
quality, and the space opera was, well, a lot less cliched than average.
