After reading "The Call of Beauty, Coming In Loud & Clear" at
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A30489-2002Feb18.html ,
complete with a comment from Kurzweil at the end, and the recent thread on
an Extropian Fragrance, I have been considering exactly what would become
beautiful to a transhuman or posthuman.
Like Ray K. says, patterns have a great deal of power. I believe it is
possible to find beauty in practically anything, except true randomness,
which could be considered beautiful in its own right. But the intensity of
the beauty is proportional to the strength of the pattern recognition in our
minds.
As we add clothing and cybernetic devices to our bodies, they would all have
a sense of beauty about them. But I believe that a more intense beauty is
discovered by an observer when these devices are removed - hence the appeal
of nakedness. In the future, when we're all wired up to the Internet Hive
Mind and wearing the latest cool fashions with the latest cool technology, I
think the really beautiful people will be presented naked. Those people with
non-removable implants will be considered "freaks" and be ugly.
cheers,
Simon
