Recall also Vinge's short story about the race of very fast but short
lived shark-like beings, while the humans involved were near
transcendant, the human 'peacekeepers' projected a huge space battleship
overhead to intimidate the natives, and a human character commented,
"Remember spaceships?"
If the natives are busy chasing UFO aliens around the skies, they won't
start looking for them in their own bloodstreams... or in the dirt.
