Its done to a certain extent in the extropian archives.

Those archives that were generated using "critmail"
(1999?) seem to have backlinks for references.
Unfortunately, more recent archives seem to be using
hypermail and it doesn't seem to be providing the
links. I'm not sure why the backlinking varies.
Hypermail is supposed to be derived from critmail
(see: http://discuss.foresight.org/critmail.html
and http://www.hypermail.org/)
