Jeff are you up to speed on Robert Bradbury's notion of an MBrain?
for what you propose, a solid shell is completely unnecessary,
for a jillion individual nodes are stable and can still communicate
with each other, and can absorb the energy coming off the star,
without the disadvantages of gravitational instability, structural
difficulties if struck by a wandering body, etc.
Methinks a solid shell is one of those things that even Ray Charles would
agree is just to damn hard, even after you know exactly how to do it.
