There's an essay on this in the current (Winter 2000) issue of Whole Earth
magazine, which was founded by Stewart Brand.

The issue is guest-edited by Kevin Kelly, former editor at Wired. It also
includes a re-print of my essay which won the Economist/Shell's World In
2050 writing competition.

There are a number of items in the issue which I think people on this list
would enjoy. Their site is http://www.wholeearthmag.com, 'though the
current issue is not yet available online.
