IBM develops self-assembly method for nanoparticles that will push
disk storage densities from current 14.3 Gbits/in^2 through lab demos
of 35.3 Gbits/in^2 all the way up to 150 Gbits/in^2! (That's
80 Gigabytes in a oversized watch!). They are going to be getting
close to the supramagnetic limit, where magnetic orientation is
unstable at room temperatures.
Then, not to be left out Bell Labs has announced that they are now
pushing 3.28 Tbits/second over a single fibers 100-km in length.
