Hmmm! That's a pretty self-effacing comment from one of literature's most
thoughtful minds. We're all products of our local culture. Maybe Well's was
also influenced by the comparative weakness of the Empire, during his later
years? Then, again, hopelessness is a poor bed-mate; and whatever the cause
neuro-geriatric, psycho-social, he seemed stricken by it. I wonder if Well's
had it wrong? That this Nazerite fellow, provided no plausible comfort for
such an original mind, such as Wells?
