In the late 19th century there was a scholarly movement called the German
High Criticism who's focus was that very point. There is a pillar listing
all the faiths active in the Roman Empire where his name is recorded 73rd in
rating of importance. I would have to research the name and location of the
pillar. However, there is no doubt he existed, it is just that there is
really very little known about him, ie what he looked like, activities other
than the last three years of his life. etc. Our primary sources of
information are from the Gospels and those were written from about 30 to 90
years after his death.
