I have read a list similar to this one in the past,
but it included at least one other sign:
The field remains barren for decades. No useful
applications appear.
Example abound: perpetual energy machines,
anti-gravity drives, Creation Science, etc. New
bogus-science gizmos are no more effective than the
ones from 1932, they just have LED's on them instead
of Jacob's Ladders.
Sometimes real science runs up against a problem so
tough that it faces the barrenness problem. Examples
include fusion energy and, ahem, artificial
intelligence.
