Different. And with a lot of people alive/unmaimed/untraumatised who
otherwise would have been dead/maimed/traumatised.
Of course wars have pushed along technology development in the past
- but trend needn't be destiny. Maybe with a little imagination we could
devise other effective motivations for technology development. (Afterall
lots of technology has been developed, even in our war dominated
periods, for reasons that have nothing to do with war.).
To stretch ourselves to make breakthroughs of any sort we need
*strong mobilising challenges* but my intuition is that there's no iron law
of the future that says that war is the best or the only suitable
challenge.
