According to the article, this kind of time machine would only let you move
as far forward and back as the time-loop extends.
Maybe a better application of this technology would be Faster Than Light
(FTL) travel. There might be a way to use it to bend space-time to allow a
space ship to slip incrementally (around each time-loop) farther forward in
space while keeping your personal time either constant, or near constant
(by returning to the same place in the loop that you
entered). Intuitively, it would just be a matter of getting the phase
right I would think to maximize efficiency, of course it will be easier to
talk about this after some real experiments have been done.
A similar system might be used for interstellar communication at FTL speeds
something that computers/people of the future could certainly take
advantage of. Heck, I'd be pretty happy with FTL bus speeds just within my PC.
