Yes, this is an excellent book, and it's on the FAI reading list. You
won't see the reading list for some time, maybe not even in the first
public release of FAI, so here's the current contents (most important
first):

  Fiction:

The first seven pages of "A Fire Upon the Deep" (Vernor Vinge)
Diaspora (Greg Egan)
Quarantine (Greg Egan)
The Two Faces of Tomorrow (James P. Hogan)
Exegesis (Astro Teller)
Exiles at the Well of Souls (Jack L. Chalker)
Queen of Angels (Greg Bear)
Feet of Clay (Terry Pratchett)
Cyberiad (Stanislaw Lem)

  Nonfiction:

The Origins of Virtue (Matt Ridley)
The Adapted Mind (Barkow-Cosmides-Tooby, technical)
Metamagical Themas (Douglas R. Hofstadter - optional if you've read
_Virtue_)
