I have been following with interest the thread on rape, and of course
I agree with the moral judgement expressed by the majority. Moreover,
personally and as far as instinctive, hormonal responses are
concerned, the idea of raping a woman would turn me off. But then I
always had a "moderate" sexual drive even as a teenager.
There are males with a "very strong" sexual drive who even if they
find it morally disgusting are turned on by the idea of rape. Those
who learned to dominate their sexually aggressive instincts deserve
respect. There are females (I think a majority, sorry if I offend
someone) who are turned on by the most aggressive sexual behaviour
that is considered "socially acceptable" at a given time.
Some writer said something like "even if a street fight is bad, the
energies displayed in it are fine". So the point that I wish to make
is that maybe sexual aggressiveness by males, and its acceptance by
females, have had evolutionary value as they tend to promote energy
and vitality in the race. Of course "have had" does not mean the same
as "has" and we can hope that as soon as we develop the technology to
rationally choose our evolutionary path we may be able to discard
"bad" things without losing "good" ones. On the other hand good and
bad may be very strongly coupled ...
